Quality of life is essential to attracting and keep a qualified workforce. Switzerland regularly ranks at the top in this important criterion. In Mercer Human Resources' 2005 Overall Quality of Life Survey among 215 cities, Zurich and Geneva tie for 1st place, while Berne ranks 8th.

An Economist Intelligence Unit study for The World in 2005 placed Switzerland second behind Ireland in its "Worldwide Quality of Life Index" ranking 111 countries based on 9 factors. The U.S. came in 13th and Britain 29th.

According to the World Economic Forum, Switzerland ranks 5th in environmental sustainability behind Finland, Norway, Canada and Sweden.
